NY Times plans Chinese version of website

The New York Times will unveil a Chinese-language version of its website, an attempt to bolster its digital operations by creating a presence in the fast-growing but difficult-to-navigate China media market.



The Chinese edition, at cn.nytimes.com, is scheduled to launch on Thursday morning in Beijing. The advertising-supported site will be specially edited for readers in China and will focus on global affairs, business and culture. It will feature select New York Times stories translated into Chinese as well as work from Chinese contributing writers.
 

Advertisers participating at launch include the retailer Bloomingdale’s, the fashion brand Ferragamo and the watch maker Cartier. The New York Times also recently started an account on the Chinese social media site Weibo and will use it to promote the site.



Media companies are eager for a piece of China’s thriving media and advertising market as they face declines and slowing growth domestically but censorship issues have proved challenging for some companies.



A New York Times spokeswoman said that some readers in China have trouble accessing certain content on its English site and that censorship could be an issue with its new Chinese language site. Twitter said in January that it would censor tweets or accounts of users in certain countries such as China.



China’s internet user population totals more than 500m people, according to the research firm Nielsen. Advertising spending in the country is expected to increase 9.3 per cent this year to $39.5bn, making it the third largest ad market in the world, according to PwC.

 

 

The launch comes as the New York Times Co narrows down its search for a new chief executive and explores new initiatives for digital growth.
Digital advertising revenues at the company declined 10.3 per cent in the three months to March, while print ad revenues dropped 7.2 per cent.
 

The New York Times joins several other internet companies and competing news outlets, including The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times, that have launched Chinese versions of their sites.

不為中國修改內容



《紐時》聲明「成立這個新網站的目的,是要把有關全球時事、商業與文化的高水準報導,提供給中國大陸越來越多有教育水平、富裕且具全球觀的公民。」盼吸引中國的中產階級為新讀者。其中文版網頁(http://cn.nytimes.com)每天提供30則新聞,國際新聞主編坎恩說,三分之二新聞來自《紐時》英文報導中譯,其餘三分之一為中國專欄作家及特約記者撰寫。 


有鑑於中國官方的新聞審查,中文《紐時》網站的伺服器架設在中國境外,內容也將遵循《紐時》的新聞標準。坎恩說,《紐時》知道過往曾有新聞被中國封鎖,但不會為了中國政府的任何要求而修改網站內容。


《紐時》英文網頁已實行「付費牆」(Paywall)制度,每月瀏覽逾20則文章者須付費觀看其他內容。但中文版不會收費。上線後,其在新浪及搜狐開設的微博一度斷線,原因不明。
