蓋茲比年輕時愛上美麗的富家女，但卻眼睜睜的看她下嫁富家子。之後蓋茲比一夕致富……並且為了奪回黛西而孤注一擲。文壇巨擘費茲傑羅在本書中完美的呈現了憤怒的20年代。

「要看一個人是否具有第一流的才能，最好的測驗莫過於看他是否能在同一時間內容納兩種相互矛盾的念頭但卻照樣能繼續其思想而不受影響。」這是費滋傑羅(1896~1940)在對他自己精神崩潰的情形所做之分析，正好成為《大亨小傳》的寫照，因為把自己寫入小說是一回事，能冷靜地保持一個距離卻是另一回事；尼克代表客觀的敘述者，蓋次璧代表主觀的浪漫主義精神，如何使這些互相矛盾的因素統一起來，才是本書的秘密所在。

我們是否能了解費茲傑羅在《大亨小傳》中想傳達的訊息及探討的角度和層面。蓋茨比的美國夢是延續五月花的原始精神，亦是美國人民宗教或文化層面的美國精神，在追求理想的過程中並不受現實裡醜陋面的影響，而義無反顧的堅持是作者想傳達的理念之一，也是他一生的寫照。如同《大亨小傳》最後的結語、費茲傑羅的墓誌銘：「So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.」（於是我們繼續往前掙扎，像逆流中的扁舟，被浪頭不斷的向後推入過去）。
