R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. One of the first popular alternative rock bands, R.E.M. gained early attention because of Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's unclear vocals. R.E.M.

released its first single, "Radio Free Europe", in 1981 on the independent record label Hib-Tone. The single was followed by the Chronic Town EP in 1982, the band's first release on I.R.S. Records. In 1983, the group released its critically acclaimed debut album, Murmur, and built its reputation over the next few years through subsequent releases, constant touring, and the support of college radio.

Following years of underground success, R.E.M. achieved a mainstream hit in 1987 with the single "The One I Love". The group signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988, and began to espouse political and environmental concerns while playing large arenas worldwide.

雖然R.E.M成立於1980年喬治亞州的雅典市，但是團員中僅有Mike Mills（出生於1958年12月17日）與Bill Berry（出生於1958年7月31日）是南方人，兩個人都在喬治亞州的麥肯市讀中學，青少年時期曾參加過好幾個樂團。

而主唱Michael Stipe（出生於1960年1月4日）是個軍人子弟，青少年時他透過Patti Smith、Television與Wire等樂團，認識了龐克搖滾這檔事兒，並且開始在密蘇里州的聖路易市中的幾個樂團中演奏。1978年，他在喬治亞州大學主修藝術，經常在一家叫做Wuxtry的唱片行流連往返，另一位團員Peter Buck（1956年12月6日出生）是加州人，他是一個唱片收集狂，從古典搖滾、龐克搖滾到爵士樂，都逃不過他的手掌心，當時他正巧是Wuxtry唱片行的店員，他在唱片行中與Michael結識，發現兩人臭味相投，於是便開始一起工作，然後又透過朋友認識了Berry與Mills。

1980年4月，他們成立了一個樂團，為了在朋友的派對上演出，他們特別在一個教堂中排練，挑選了數首garage調調的流行歌曲，並翻唱了幾首龐克搖滾歌曲，當時，他們的團名叫做Twisted Kites。該年夏天，他們用字典亂數挑選後，將團名改變為R.E.M.，不久後他們認識了經紀人Jefferson Holt，從此展開了長期的合作關係（Jefferson在第一次聽到R.E.M.在北加州舉行的演唱會後，就決定當他們的經紀人了）。
