Taipei, Feb. 22 (CNA) Lin Hwai-min, founder and artistic director of Taiwan's Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, will be this year's recipient of the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement, the festival announced Wednesday.

 

 

 

Lin will be the first award recipient who is based outside the United States or Europe.

 

 

 

The award was established by Samuel H. Scripps and the American Dance Festival in 1981. Past award recipients include renowned U.S. choreographer Martha Graham.

 

 

 

In announcing the award, the festival said Lin's illustrious career as a choreographer has spanned over four decades and has earned him international praise for his impact on Chinese modern dance.

 

 

 

"While his works often draw inspiration from traditional elements of Asian culture and aesthetics, his choreographic brilliance continue to push boundaries and redefine the art from," it said.

 

 

 

Upon learning the news, Lin said he was honored to be the first non-American, non-European recipient of the award.

 

 

 

"The award is not only for me, it is for all of Taiwanese society. I want to thank Taiwanese society for given Cloud Gate an opportunity over the past 40 years with its applause and substantive support."

 

 

 

This is not the first time that Lin has been honored abroad.

 

 

 

In 2005, Mr. Lin was celebrated by Time magazine as one of "Asia's Heroes," and in 2009 he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Movimentos Dance Awards in Germany.

 

 

 

Other honors include honorary doctorates from six universities in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the Taiwan National Award for Arts, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award, and the award for Best Choreographer at the Lyon Dance Biennial Festival.

「雲門舞集」創辦人林懷民創立雲門40年,獲獎無數,昨再傳喜訊,美國舞蹈藝術節宣布他為今年「終身成就獎」得主,是歐美以外地區第1位獲獎人,也是華人第一。他19日剛過66歲生日,昨仍為《流浪者之歌》的演出忙碌,笑言:「我從不過生日,不管得獎不得獎,有錢沒錢,都要工作,活在當下!」

 

 

 

林懷民曾被《時代》雜誌選為「亞洲英雄」人物,也獲法國藝術文學騎士勳章榮譽。這次成為「撒姆爾.史克利普╱美國舞蹈節終身成就獎」得主,被盛讚是「超凡的編舞家」。該獎項1981年創立,歷屆得主瑪莎.葛蘭姆(Martha Graham)、碧娜.鮑許(Pina Bausch)等人都是大師級人物,堪稱國際現代舞的終極名人堂。

 

 

 

7月赴美領獎
林懷民昨表示:「這個榮耀不是給我一個人,是給整個社會的,感謝台灣社會40年來用掌聲支持。」他也表示希望大家可以支持年輕藝術家。該獎頒獎時間定於7月26日晚間在北卡羅萊納州德罕藝術表演中心舉行。
